About Alpine

Alpine is the largest town in a very large swath of West Texas — and the practical base for anyone exploring Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, and the Davis Mountains. Sul Ross State University brings a lively academic energy to this high-desert ranching town, and the Museum of the Big Bend is one of the finest regional museums in Texas. The sky here is big and the stars bigger.

Things to Do

1

Museum of the Big Bend

The definitive museum for the Trans-Pecos region, with exhibits covering Native American cultures, Spanish and Mexican history, the frontier era, ranching, railroads, and the unique geology and natural history of the Chihuahuan Desert. Housed in a striking 1936 building on the Sul Ross campus.

2

Stargazing at McDonald Observatory

McDonald Observatory, 26 miles north at Fort Davis, hosts Star Parties and daytime solar viewing sessions with some of the darkest skies in the lower 48. It's a legitimate pilgrimage for astronomy enthusiasts.

3

Big Bend National Park Day Trip

The park is 80 miles south on U.S. 385. Alpine is a practical staging base for a dawn-to-dusk park day — pack your gear the night before and leave at 5am.

4

Holland Hotel Bar

The 1912 Holland Hotel is a historic landmark and the social center of Alpine. The bar is warm, welcoming, and hung with local art. The porch is one of the finest spots in West Texas to watch a storm roll in across the desert.

Where to Eat

🍽️

Reata Restaurant

The Alpine branch of the famous Fort Worth Reata chain, serving high-end Texas ranch cuisine in a spectacular setting. The prickly pear margarita is mandatory.

🍽️

Cow Dog

A legendary lunch spot beloved by Sul Ross students and half the ranchers in Brewster County. The green chile cheeseburger is the move.

🗺️ Getting There

230 miles southeast of El Paso on I-10 and U.S. 90. Midland/Odessa is the closest major airport (150 miles northeast).

📅 Best Time to Visit

March–May and September–November. The high elevation keeps summers 15°F cooler than the valley, making it comfortable even in July.

🤠 Did You Know?

Alpine sits at 4,475 feet elevation — higher than Denver's "mile-high city" designation. The temperature difference between Alpine and the Rio Grande 80 miles south can exceed 30°F.
