About Comfort

Comfort was settled in 1854 by a group of freethinkers — German immigrants who were skeptical of organized religion and deeply committed to intellectual life, art, and community. Their influence is still visible in the remarkably intact High Street commercial district, one of the most complete collections of 19th-century commercial architecture in Texas. The town also contains the only monument in the former Confederacy honoring those who remained loyal to the Union.

Things to Do

1

Walk Historic High Street

The six-block commercial district along High Street contains over 100 structures on the National Register of Historic Places. The limestone buildings date from the 1860s through 1900s, and almost none have been significantly altered. It's a genuine 19th-century Texas streetscape.

2

Visit the Treue der Union Monument

The only monument in the former Confederacy dedicated to Union loyalists. Thirty-six German immigrants who refused to fight for the Confederacy were killed by Confederate troops in 1862. Their names are carved into this simple but powerful obelisk.

3

Wine Tasting at Comfort Cellars

A charming boutique winery right in the historic district, producing Hill Country wines with European-style restraint. The tasting room is in a converted 1880s building.

4

Swim Cypress Creek

The creek that runs through town offers several natural swimming holes shaded by ancient cypress trees. Locals have been cooling off here for 170 years.

Where to Eat

🍽️

High's Cafe & Store

Excellent scratch-made food — soups, sandwiches, and seasonal specials — inside an 1880 general store. One of the best lunch spots in the Hill Country.

🍽️

Comfort Pizza

Wood-fired pizza in the heart of the historic district. Simple, excellent, and a welcome surprise in such a small town.

🗺️ Getting There

44 miles north of San Antonio on I-10. 22 miles south of Kerrville.

📅 Best Time to Visit

Fall and spring for comfortable temperatures and the least tourist traffic. The Christmas in Comfort events in December are genuinely festive.

🤠 Did You Know?

Comfort has never officially incorporated as a city — its residents have voted down incorporation multiple times since the 1800s, preferring to remain an unincorporated community.
