About Cuero

Cuero sits on the Guadalupe River in the post oak savanna of South Texas, and for most of its history was defined by the turkey industry — at its peak, more than a million turkeys were raised in DeWitt County annually. The Turkey Trot festival (held since 1912) and the annual Turkey Trot race between the towns of Cuero and Worthington (a competing Texas town) put Cuero on the national map in the early 20th century. The town also sits along the Chisholm Trail and has excellent historic preservation.

Things to Do

1

Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum

One of the better Chisholm Trail museums in Texas, with artifacts, photographs, and exhibits tracing the cattle drives from South Texas north through Cuero, Lockhart, and beyond. The Trail passed directly through town, and the museum captures its significance to the region.

2

Turkey Trot Festival

Every October since 1912, Cuero has celebrated its turkey heritage with a festival featuring a Turkey Trot 5K race, live music, food vendors, and the legendary Turkey Race between Cuero's "Ruby Begonia" and whatever champion turkey the opposing town puts forward.

3

Guadalupe River Fishing

The Guadalupe runs through the county with excellent access for fishing, kayaking, and swimming. The stretch near Cuero has good populations of bass, catfish, and freshwater drum.

4

Historic Downtown Walk

Cuero's downtown has a fine collection of late Victorian commercial buildings, several of which have been restored to house local businesses. The 1896 DeWitt County Courthouse is a handsome limestone landmark.
