About Ennis

Ennis is the only city in America officially designated the "National Bluebonnet City" by the Texas Legislature, and every spring the fields surrounding town burst into some of the densest concentrations of bluebonnets in the state. The town is also heavily Czech — the Czech immigrants who settled here in the 1880s left behind a heritage that shows up in the food, the architecture, the polka music, and the National Polka Festival every Memorial Day weekend.

Things to Do

1

Bluebonnet Trails

Every year in late March through mid-April, the Ennis Garden Club marks 40 miles of driving trails through the bluebonnet fields surrounding the city. The trails change each year depending on where the blooms are densest, and maps are available from the tourist bureau. This is the real deal — fields blanketed in blue.

2

National Polka Festival

Memorial Day weekend brings polka bands from across the country to Ennis for three days of dancing, food, and Czech heritage celebration. The competition polka dancing, the kolaches, and the Lone Star beer combine into something uniquely Texan.

3

Ennis Railroad and Cultural Heritage Museum

Ennis grew as a railroad town on the Houston and Texas Central Railway, and this museum tells the story of the railroads, the Czech immigrants, and the cotton economy that built the city. The Czech heritage section is particularly well done.

Where to Eat

Marley's Bar & Grille

🍽️

JD's Czech Kolache Shop

Authentic Czech kolaches in the town that takes them most seriously in North Texas. Come early — they sell out.

🤠 Did You Know?

Ennis's bluebonnet fields are the result of both natural abundance and deliberate cultivation — the city has planted millions of additional seeds over the decades to maintain and expand the blooms.
