About Rockport

Rockport is where the art galleries and the pelicans share the waterfront with equal claim. The town sits on Aransas Bay, and the surrounding coastal ecosystem — Aransas National Wildlife Refuge across the bay, the bays and estuaries, and the migratory flyway overhead — makes it the best birding location in the continental United States. Every fall, the endangered Whooping Cranes winter at Aransas Refuge, and every September, the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird migration turns Rockport into the hummingbird capital of North America.

Things to Do

1

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

The only wintering ground for the endangered Whooping Crane — the tallest bird in North America at nearly 5 feet. Tour boats leave from Rockport from November through March to see the cranes feeding in the salt marshes. The refuge also harbors Roseate Spoonbills, alligators, and hundreds of other species year-round.

2

Hummingbird Festival

Every mid-September, the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird migration peaks in Rockport, with millions of birds stopping to refuel before crossing the Gulf of Mexico. The Hummer/Bird Celebration attracts birders from around the world for guided tours, clinics, and the extraordinary sight of feeders mobbed by hundreds of hummingbirds at once.

3

Rockport Center for the Arts

One of the finest small-city arts centers in Texas, with rotating exhibits of both emerging and established artists. The permanent collection focuses on Gulf Coast and marine-themed work.

4

Fulton Mansion

A Victorian mansion built in 1877 that was a technological marvel for its time — with central heating, modern plumbing, and a gas lighting system. The state historic site offers tours that reveal both the engineering innovations and the story of the Fulton family.

🤠 Did You Know?

Rockport was almost destroyed by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which made a direct landfall here as a Category 4. The town has rebuilt remarkably — and the wildlife refuge and the birds came back within a season.
