About Salado

Salado Creek gave this village its name and made it a stop on the Chisholm Trail — a natural watering spot for cattle drives heading north. The Stagecoach Inn has been welcoming travelers since 1861, making it one of the longest continuously operating inns in Texas. Today Salado is an arts village with over 60 studios and galleries, excellent restaurants, and a historic main street that still feels like a stagecoach town.

Things to Do

1

Stagecoach Inn

The historic inn has hosted Sam Houston, General Custer, and Jesse James (at different times, and not all voluntarily). The current building dates from 1943, replacing the original 1861 structure, but the site has been hosting travelers continuously for over 160 years.

2

Gallery Hopping

Salado has more than 60 working artists and galleries concentrated in a few walkable blocks. The quality ranges from tourist souvenir to museum-grade, and the finds in between are genuine. Plan a full afternoon.

3

Tablerock Outdoor Theatre

An outdoor amphitheater set against a cedar and live oak backdrop, hosting Shakespeare, musicals, and original Texas history productions. The Fiddler's Festival each November is a regional tradition.

4

Salado Creek Walk

The creek runs through the middle of town, with a shaded walk connecting the art galleries and historic buildings. Several swimming holes are accessible from the path.

Where to Eat

🍽️

The Range at the Stagecoach Inn

Fine dining in the historic inn's dining room. The menu leans Texas ranch — wild game, Gulf seafood, and steaks. The pecan pie is required.

🍽️

Salado Winery

A working winery in a restored 1880s building with a patio overlooking the creek. The Cabernet and the Viognier are the best pours.

🗺️ Getting There

55 miles north of Austin on I-35. Exit 283 for the historic district.

📅 Best Time to Visit

Spring for wildflowers along the creek. Fall for the Tablerock Shakespeare season and cooler temperatures. Christmas season is surprisingly beautiful.

🤠 Did You Know?

Salado Creek's spring-fed waters were so reliable that the Republic of Texas briefly considered Salado as the location for the state capital in 1839 before choosing Austin.
